God-modding. Power-gaming. Being a newb as some people say. All phrases were familiar with, but its rather evident that a lot of people are clueless as to what it really- is. You cant sum it up in a matter of a few rules, for the vastness of it is too grand to merely throw it into just a few simple categories. But always, the base of power-gaming will stay the same, and in this sort of context, its rather ludicrous. Doing the impossible. It seems that some forms of impossibility are more socially acceptable than others, and each person stands next to their own morals, thoughts, boundaries and ideals.
As we see in most fights, if you really look at whats happening, youll find that most of the time its a clash of RP style. A difference of opinion. Either way, most allegations stand on very slippery ground, and are in a lot of cases, unjust.
For the people out there Ive noticed with the two rules, A) One cannot call a hit upon their opponents and B) One cannot evade all hits. Starting with A), it is always impossible to dictate what your opponents move will be, but the fact of the matter is this. People dont need to kick up a stink over it because one persons style involves continuing through with their move and saying what will happen. All people have to do is treat it as what would- happen if the situation where to stay the same. There is no point moving to meaningless OOC bickering, because we all know that isnt enjoyable.
B) Is perhaps one of the most moronic things I have come into contact with. For those people out there that actually have the ability to finish a fight quickly, youll understand that its not too much to ask for. Logically anyone can come out of a fight unscathed, and even laughing their way to the tavern at the end of it.
So how do we know what is power-gaming, and what isnt? In this fantasy world that we inhabit, we ask for realism within something that is the complete opposite. Where is the line drawn?
Im sure most of us have our own thoughts about this, and Ill voice my own. I play all my characters within a realistic style. I actually think about what a person in the shape that my character is in, could do. I drop the façade of Demonic strength and Vampire like speed and simply play on an even battlefield. I also treat my opponent with the same respect I give myself. To each his own, and the realism stays within.
Im not asking anyone to take on my style, as its exactly that, something I have come to use, and even enjoy. Notice the word enjoy? Funny little phrase that doesnt come up even half as much as it should in most fights. Always remember why youre all here and doing this. It is supposed to be a game that we all enjoy.
No one out there is a saint when it comes to this topic, though some may claim to be. But in all honesty, I wonder how many people take their characters endurance into consideration during a fight. Where in a one minute spar, holding a bastard sword for example, every single one of you would be sitting down panting, gasping for water, if you could actually swing it in the arc you say you could. With that as an example, how long do you think a fully seasoned warrior could do the same? How long until theyre weakly batting at each other like a pair of children falling asleep? No more than three minutes, I can assure you of that.
I suspect anyone who actually just thought about that cant ever recall passing out from exhaustion in a fight. Though, once more, this issue is socially acceptable within the fantasy world. Why? Id suspect that it was an understanding that the fight wouldnt really be all that fantastically spectacular if you had two red faced people panting for their lives, locked in a childs wooden sword battle.
So the definition of a fair fight; Remaining possible While being impossible, confusing, yes? Why do we bother asking, Am I a god-modder? and why do we bother accusing, Who thinks he is power-gaming?! The simple fact of the matter is this. You dont like it? Cant deal with it? Youre not forced to be there and you wont change peoples views and opinions. Drop the pride, and walk away.
Conclusion to god-modding? Its not your problem unless you make it your problem.
